Barcelona San Sebastià beach
The first sight of sea and sand you encounter, on arrival at the end of the marina strip from Barceloneta Metro, is San Sebastià, which is commonly mistaken for Barceloneta beach.
Being within 10 minutes walk it is the closest beach from the historic centre, stretching from the end pier of the marina until the giant cubist sculpture.
Well prepared for beachgoers, it has lots of supermarkets for stocking up on food and drinks.
This beach is also lined with Chiringuitos, the hip beach hut bars, as well as public WCs, showers and an array of superb cocktail bars. This part of the beach brings a young and very international crowd.
Barcelona Barceloneta beach
The next pier until Port Olimpico is therefore Barceloneta beach, a summer favourite with young tourists and its locals.
It’s great to venture off into the neighbourhood a little to find an authentic seafood tapas bar for lunch.
After the last beach bar, the area becomes more apt for families, with a jungle gym for kids, public changing rooms and a string of restaurants leading up to the famous marina port.
Barcelona Port Olimpico beach
Port Olimpico, headed by the tall Mapfre towers and its huge, copper goldfish sculpture, has a casino, shops, a multitude of top seafood restaurants and buzzing nightlife.
Always a favourite with visitors, this area makes for a fun afternoon trip for families and a fabulous night out for groups.
Hundreds of yachts and cruisers are moored at the marina, coming from all over the world. This attracts a very upmarket clientéle and creates a very glamorous backdrop for clubbing.
Nova Icária beach
The next stop on the beach trail is Nova Icária, next to Ciutadella Vila Olimpico Metro, slightly further from the centre.
This beach has softer sands and it is wider; it's therefore more active with volleyball and various beach games.
Its combination of closeby parking, public facilities and proximity to Port Olimpico’s eateries, make it popular with families and sporty young things alike.
Barcelona Bogatell beach
After the following pier is Bogatell beach and although it is a little quieter and more relaxed for families on the sand, the water is slightly deeper and more choppy here.
This has brought about a busy array of watersports, such as jetski and canoeing, along with cyclists and rollerbladers enjoying the paved walkway which heads out to Marbella.
Bogatell beach also holds its own in trendy beach bars and some fish restaurants with great views, along the promenade.
Marbella beach Barcelona
Marbella beach has become more and more popular in recent years. About 10 minutes from the centre of Barcelona, near to Poble Nou Metro, it has brilliant parking, it’s less crowded and yet still comes equipped with bars and amenities.
With less of a city beach feel, it is known for its small nudist section as well as hosting good djs, hot summer parties and cocktails for the trendy crowds all through the weekend.
The water is cleaner and deeper and gets attention from windsurfers, among other watersports fans.
Barcelona Nova Mar Bella
Arriving at the coastal edge of the Poble Nou district is Nova Mar Bella beach , which is the noticeably more tranquil and untouched of Barcelona’s sunny beaches.
Frequented by locals as an alternative to getting out of the city in the summer, this is the last beach before arriving at Barcelona's key entertainment venue, the Forum.
It offers the same standard of service and amenities, while having clearer waters and a quieter ambience.
Barcelona Sitges beach
The El Garraf beach area, which runs along the coastline of the pretty fishing village of Sitges, is a lot less mainstream, with little coves to explore and softer sands.
Known as a gay and nudist hang-out, this town’s beach reputation nevertheless attracts all groups who come for its beautiful beaches and is therefore always a favourite.
Beach-lovers say it’s definitely worth the short train-ride out of Barcelona, which takes just 30 minutes from Sants Estació.
