Checkpoint Charlie Berlin Berlin is unique in Europe, in that its metropolitan area is extremely spread out, with huge greenspaces and undeveloped areas. Berlin is loved for its tranquil and at times, industrial beauty. Each district has its own culture, meaning that suburbia is just as interesting as central Mitte.

In Berlin, expect to use the U-Bahn or S-Bahn, to efficiently whisk you across the city. Using a bike to get around is also ideal, as the city is flat and you can get your bearings. Have a look at the area guide for more on Berlin's central areas.

BERLIN NEIGHBOURHOOD AREA GUIDE

Mitte

Badeschiff Swimming Pool Berlin Mitte is Berlin’s vast central zone, encompassing some of the liveliest “downtown” areas such as:

Alexanderplatz. This central square boasts the TV Tower and is located minutes from Museum Island.
Hackescher Markt. Historically a market area, there are many artsy cafés, busy with the young and hip, as well as design and vintage stores and alternative galleries.
Nordbahnhof. With a backdrop of Berlin’s fabulous TV tower, you’ll find quality restaurants along the river Spree and the Tacheles factory for art and nightlife.
Checkpoint Charlie. South in Mitte towards the old divide, you’ll find the Gendarmenmarkt and typical skyrise buildings, or shopping on Friedrichstraβe.

Prenzlauer Berg

Checkpoint Charlie Berlin Prenzlauer Berg is Berlin’s undisputed hangout for the hip socialites of the city. Just a short journey from Hackescher Markt, Alexanderplatz or the Volkspark, Prenzlauer Berg has art, culture, vintage shopping and a laid-back vibe.

This is Berlin’s über-trendy district, a favourite with young crowds and artsy types who frequent its terrace cafés, kitsch boutiques and alternative-style bars around Kollwitzplatz, or the Kulturbrauerei, an old brewery with shops and nightlife. Nearby Volkspark Friedrichshain has a lake, fairytale fountain, film showings and beergardens.

Friedrichshain

Formerly Berlin's eastern part on the Berlin Wall divide, the Friedrichshain area is well-known for its hugely cultural Volkspark Friedrichshain, its art scene and Berliner brunching.

Frankurter Allee is a broad avenue popular for shopping, there are hip bars and nightlife south in the district, or flea markets and trendy brunch cafés around Boxhagener Platz.

Great public transport connections mean that favourites such as Berlin’s TV tower, shopping in Hackescher Markt or the Reichstag and Brandenburg gate are 10 minutes away.

Kreuzberg

Bordering Friedrichshain in Berlin's old West, Kreuzberg is famous for its contemporary multi-kulti vibe and an array of trendy bars, alternative discos and Berlin's revered industrial nightclubs. Around Oranienstraße and Oranienplatz you will find bakeries, Turkish eateries and local café bars, or visit the galleries and design boutiques in the area.

Southern Kreuzberg is great for walks along the canal, bars around Bergmannstraße or a trip to Viktoriapark, with a waterfall monument at its crest and superb city views.

Schöneberg

The upmarket Schöneberg district, south of Berlin's Tiergarten forest, has plenty of stores and supermarkets nearby. You’ll find luxury shopping on the Ku’Damm, KaDeWe mall or antique fleamarkets at Tiergarten. Check out Berlin’s Zoo and the blitzed Kaiser-Wilhelm church nearby or Charlottenburg castle at a short commute.

Design enthusiasts love the Bauhaus-Archiv and there's eclectic nightlife on Motzstraβe and Fuggerstraβe. Public transport takes you to the Brandenburg gate and Alexanderplatz in about 15 minutes.

Tiergarten

West of central Mitte, Berlin's Tiergarten offers you the biggest city forest and outdoor activities, as well as cultural must-see's. Tiergarten has Berlin's biggest antiques and Fleamarket, the landmark victory monument with its winged bronze sculpture, or the zoo.

Tiergarten forest with its boating lakes and trails is excellent to explore on foot. You can also take the bus route 200, with the most extensive circuit of Berlin's favourite sights, such as the Kaiser-Wilhelm church. Tiergarten is perfect for business and family trips, thanks to a tranquil surround.

Wilmersdorf

The laid-back Wilmersdorf borders with Schöneberg and Charlottenburg, mixing modern with typical old townhouses and an array of top cultural attractions closeby.

Berlin’s diplomatic buildings are here and it’s a short walk or commute to the KaDeWe mall, or the Tiergarten markets. Aside from its cafés and conveniences, this area enjoys a proximity to Berlin’s lakes. Wilmersdorf is great for relaxing in pretty surroundings and taking it easy, with fast public transports to bring you to Berlin’s central attractions in Mitte.

Charlottenburg

Charming Charlottenburg is known for its small-town feel and more traditional German buildings, as well as its castle and the modern Messe tradeshow grounds. You will find picturesque churches, little squares and conveniences or venture north in the district for pleasant walks along the river Spree.

U-Bahn and S-Bahn connections take you out to the Beautiful Schlachtensee lakes; popular for Berlin’s hip crowds in milder weather, or into central Mitte, in a short commute.

Wedding

Berlin's Wedding district has a typical suburban feel to it, with an array of tranquil green areas and excellent U-Bahn connections.

Known for its intercultural mix, you will find plenty of local or ethnic shops and eateries surrounding the huge parks in this area; Goethepark, Volkspark Rehberge and Schillerpark. U-Bahn connections take you directly to Berlin’s famous fleamarkets at Tiergarten and the Bauhaus-Archiv museum, or Alexanderplatz and Berlin favourites in central Mitte.

Treptow-Köpenick

East of Kreuzberg, Berlin's Treptow-Köpenick area is one of the city’s tranquil leafy suburbs, with prestigious Victorian manor houses and many of Berlin’s lakes and forests.

This area is more favoured for its scenic setting and direct public transport connections, arriving in central Berlin in about 20 minutes. The lakes and trails are great for outdoor activities such as swimming at the Badeschiff pool and cycling, or catch one the frequent transports to visit Berlin’s Potsdamer Platz or its galleries and nightlife.
