The fabulous City of Light, Paris is great for explorers, with a broad network of frequent public transport.
Paris’ city districts, or arrondissements, are labelled in ascending order from the centre, in a snailshell spiral.
Each of its 20 districts has plenty of landmarks and museums. You'll find a unique burst of culture around every corner. With parks, fresh markets, cafés and unforgettable scenery; all of Paris’ arrondissements are thoroughly enjoyable for your time in the beautiful French capital.
PARIS NEIGHBOURHOOD AREA GUIDE
1er arrondissement: Louvre Les Halles
The Louvre (1er arrondissement) in the very centre of Paris, boasts many of the city’s tourist hot-spots and cafés.
Visit the Louvre Museum, home to the famous Mona Lisa, or the L’Orangerie, with Monet’s Waterlilies paintings. You can also relax in the beautiful Tuileries Gardens nearby.
Forum des Halles is ideal for shopping, but Plaçe Vendôme has the ultimate in designer stores. Alternatively, check out the collectors' market on Avenue de Marigny.
Notable Louvre bridges are Pont Neuf, the oldest in Paris, and Pont des Arts. The latter is popular for picnics or a romantic evening watching the boats glide along the Seine.

2ème arrondissement: Bourse
This area is named after its defining building La Bourse, the Parisian stock exchange, with many bank headquarters set in grand architecture and Haussmann buildings.
La Bourse offers you one of Paris' best outdoor markets. Fashionable Montorgueil has a pedestrianised market area with fresh daily produce and many little cafés.
The National Library and the celebrated Place des Victoires can also be found in this small but central arrondissement.

3ème arrondissement: Temple- Le Marais
Le Marais' 17th century mansions crown the district, although the buildings are now inhabited by Paris' chic young professionals.
A favourite for pleasure-seekers is Place des Vosges for its grassy areas, surrounded by splendid baroque mansions, once home to writers such as Victor Hugo and Madame de Sevigné.
Museums here include the Carnavalet and the Picasso Museum.
Le Marais is great for café bars and offbeat shopping, with a good flea market at Passage du Grand Cerf.

4ème arrondissement: Hôtel-de-Ville - Le Marais
Also Le Marais, the 4ème arrondissement is named after its Hôtel-de-Ville (city hall). On the right bank of the Seine, the city hall is adjacent to the Notre Dame Cathedral.
Parisian lifestyle is abundant in Le Marais. Bakeries, cafés and boutiques with a modern vibe are the face of modern Le Marais. Rue des Rosiers, the Ile St. Louis and the Ile de la Cité are its characteristic areas.
From Place du Vert Galant, catch a boat tour from the Vedettes du Pont Neuf, or visit the flower market at Quai de la Corse.
Centre Pompidou, with its famous inside-out architecture is also located here.

5ème arrondissement: Quartier Latin
Nicknamed Quartier Latin or the Latin Quarter after its originally Latin-speaking student population at Sorbonne University, this area has a small-town feel and a boho style.
A vibrant mix of students, artists and young professionals dominate the district and the trendy Boulevard Saint Germain.
Along Quai de Montebello are stalls with old prints and knick-knacks. Visit Rue Mouffetard for art shops or take in some jazz at one of the hang-outs on Rue Galande.
The 5ème is named for its necropolis, Panthéon, resting place to Paris celebrities such as Voltaire, Rousseau, Hugo and Zola.
This district also has many visitors to its Natural History Museum.

6ème arrondissement: Saint Germain
Saint Germain is Paris' boho-chic district, with an array of art galleries, boutiques, modern cuisine and Place Saint Sulpice with a designer flea market.
The Luxembourg palace and gardens are also located in this district. Built for Marie de Medicis in the early 17th Century, the palace and its gardens are a sprawling beauty.
Famous for its café culture, Saint Germain maintains intellects' cafés from last century, for example Les Deux Magots, once frequented by Hemingway, Sartre and Picasso.

7ème arrondissement: Tour Eiffel
This district features Paris’ Eiffel Tower. Just as fantastic to view from the top, the tower makes a lovely backdrop by the Trocadero. At this stretch of fountains with grassy slopes, enjoy the picture-postcard view and maybe a spot of lunch.
Musée d'Orsay is located here in the 7ème, with one of the most astounding collections of impressionist art to be seen. Degas, Lautrec and Van Gogh feature, to name a few.
Tour Eiffel district is an international, classy neighbrouhood.

8ème arrondissement: Champs Élysées
Named after its central boulevard, Champs Elysées district also includes Place de la Concorde and Place de la Madeleine.
Les Champs-Elysées is possibly the prettiest avenue in the world; bustling and tree-lined with stores and restaurants. Leading up to the Arc de Triomphe, the sparkling scene here at night serves Paris’ reputation as the City of Light.
The area has a classy Parisian vibe. Nearby Parc de Monceau and several palaces offer sublime spots for a rest or check out Quartier Monceau's flower market.

9ème arrondissement: Opéra
The Opéra district was once the “hub” of Paris society; its elegant surroundings are still very evident.
Several opera houses are situated in this popular area. In Beaux-Arts style, the lavish Opéra Garnier should not be overlooked. In true Phantom of the Opera style, it has a lake running beneath its cellars!
Pigalle with the old Red Light district are also in this arrondissment.
Commerce thrives in all ten levels of shopping in the Galeries Lafayette and also Printemps, or you could enjoy the Saturday outdoor market on Boulevard de Clichy.

10ème arrondissement: Gare de L'Est
Of the six major train stations in Paris, both Gare de l'Est and Gare du Nord, are conveniently located in this district.
The neighbourhood has a multi-cultural influence; you will find ample shops and markets for ethnic produce, among its grand Haussmann buildings.
You can also enjoy a stroll along the trendy Canal Saint-Martin to admire one of Paris’ lesser known viewpoints, or stop in for a bite to eat at one of its laid-back cafés.

11ème arrondissement: La Bastille
La Bastille is well-known for its Place de Bastille, and also Bastille Opéra, but the area has more modern assets for the young and fashionable.
Busy at night with many good bar areas such as Oberkampf, you will find wine bars and a slightly grungy feel. Rue de Lappe, Rue du Faubourg St. Antoine are also notably lively.
Suiting its hip vibe, the 11ème also pays homage to the late Edith Piaf with a museum about the singer, in the area.

12ème arrondissement: Reuilly
Reuilly has a local feel and borders the charming Bois de Vincennes. The largest green area in Paris, it boasts a boating lake, gardens and delightful Renaissance structures.
Palais Omnisports de Paris-Bercy, also located in this arrondissement, hosts many sporting events in basketball, boxing, gymnastics and track cycling.
Find in this district the Gare du Lyon train station, constructed for the Universal Exhibition of 1900.

13ème arrondissement: Chinatown
This area is Paris' main Chinatown. With over 150 Chinese restaurants, the neighbourhood spans Place d'Italie and its borders are Avenue d'Ivry and Boulevard Masséna.
Paris' Chinatown has a great variety of shops and supermarkets among typical Haussmann buildings, and the area hosts key cultural events in the Chinese calendar.
Institutions such as the Bibliothèque François Mitterrand and the Joan of Arc statue are also tourist favourites here.

14ème arrondissement: Montparnasse
In the Montparnasse area, Montparnasse tower, Gare Montparnasse, pretty Parc Montsouris and Stade Charléty are all key attractions to this Paris arrondissement.
Place Denfert-Rochereau is a bustling social area, due to its cinemas, established cafés and restaurants.
Take a stroll through the Cimetière du Montparnasse, resting place of Sartre, or see the Paris Catacombs; creepy skulls and bones in a series of underground tunnels.

15ème arrondissement: Seine
The Seine district has a wide range of residents, from very upper-class residences by the Seine's margins, to an area of young professionals and students by the Left Bank.
Porte de Versailles holds great art exhibits, and nearby Front de Seine, also called Beaugrenelle, approaches the Eiffel Tower, making a lovely riverside area for a stroll.
Parc André Citroën in this district offers a hot air balloon ride, for a brilliant air-view of Paris.

16ème arrondissement: Bois du Boulogne
Bois de Boulogne, named for its fabulous country-style park, is one of Paris' quiet upper-class districts, especially around Avenue Foch, Auteuil and Passy.
The park itself has a beautifully designed garden theatre hosting plays by Shakespeare outdoors during high season.
For sports fanatics, the Parc des Princes (Paris SG football club) and Stade Jean-Bouin (Français Rugby Union) are great Paris stadiums.
Tennis fans love the Roland Garros Stadium, the site of the French open.

17ème arrondissement: Arc de Triomphe
Arc de Triomphe district offers a tranquil upmarket setting, with fast connections to Paris' central historical cultural core and plenty of amenities nearby for shopping or eating out.
Visit the popular Place de Clichy, Marché Poncelet, and the Concorde Lafayette, or take a picnic to the Parc Monceau.
In the Arc de Triomphe arrondissement, cultural Montmartre and the grand Opéra district are at a short distance on foot or by public transport.

18ème arrondissement: Montmartre
Montmartre is Paris' most unique of arrondissements, thanks to hilly setting around the Sacré Coeur and its history in music and the arts. The 18ème is famous for its Place du Tertre which is always busy with budding painters.
Its narrow streets lead up to the Sacré Coeur cathedral at its crest, with grassy parks overlooking Paris.
The market Marché Barbès is unique for African produce. Also Paris' best bakeries can be found in Montmartre.
Live jazz in Montmartre is always at hand if you aren’t interested in the Moulin Rouge.

19ème arrondissement: Buttes-Chaumont
Buttes-Chaumont district in Paris is known for its canals; where the canals meet at Parc de la Villette, there are performances and shows; a main feature of this 19ème district.
The Cité des Sciences et de l'Industrie is intriguing for its space-age architecture and layout.
Music Enthusiasts will be thrilled in this district by the Cité de la Musique and Le Conservatoire de Paris, which form one of the most renowned music centres in Europe.

20ème arrondissement: Belleville
Paris' Belleville area, with connotations of rich and poor and the birthplace of Edith Piaf, certainly has a lot to offer.
In the 80's, part of this arrondissement also became Paris’ smaller Chinatown, with an Asian open air market on Rue Rebeval, more like Saigon than Paris at times!
Belleville is most visited for its Père-Lachaise Cemetery. The resting place for international stars such as Chopin, Rossini, Piaf, Wilde, Proust, Pissarro, and Jim Morrison, it's a site of pilgrimage for young and old alike.
