The Marquês de Pombal, one of Portugal's great prime ministers, looks out from atop his column in the centre of the eponymously named plaça - there’s no doubt about the focal point of this area.
The Pombal roundabout is a meeting point for a number of avenues, including Av. Da Liberdade. Cars, people and even the very slopes of Lisbon seem to gravitate towards it. The imposing façades of large banks and hotels cradle the circular square. It’s an impressive cityscape, and an exciting and busy place to be.
