Amsterdam public transport information

Thanks to its unique inner-city canal network, public transport in Amsterdam is quite atypical. Instead of cars and buses in the city centre, Amsterdam has its own innovative transport system, using canal buses, taxi rickshaws and a great tram and metro network.
For a true Amsterdam experience, join the hundreds and thousands of cyclists using the city's many cycle paths around the city. Bikes are readily available for hire and inexpensive, at around 8 Euro per day.
Taxi in Amsterdam
Taxi ranks are located all over Amsterdam, but a more efficient way of getting a cab is by phoning a taxi company. Hailing a taxi in Amsterdam is not easy; alternative transport is recommended, especially at weekends.
A more economical and environmental approach is to take a modern rickshaw, the Dutch fietstaxi. The friendly driver and open-air ride make for an extremely leisurely way to get around the canals to your destination.
Metro, tram and canal bus in Amsterdam
The cheapest way to travel in Amsterdam is using the GVB transport network of trams and metro, with buses and night bus services. The open tickets, for any GVB network, vary from a 24 hour pass (7 Euro) to a four day pass (17.50 Euro). Similarly, the strippenkaart is good value for multiple journeys. Buy them at a GVB kiosk or newspaper stand. Lines run from 6am (7.30am Sunday) till midnight.
An authentic way to see the sights and travel in Amsterdam is by catching a canal bus. These hop-on hop-off water buses go along 3 different routes, stopping at all major points of interest and with some historical commentary. Lines run from 10am until around 7pm and a day-pass (valid until noon the next day) costs 16 Euro.
Museumboot, another canal bus, stops at Centraal station, East Dock and Museum areas, but this 14 Euro day ticket also gets you half-price entry into most of Amsterdam's museums.
Centraal station in Amsterdam
Centraal station in Amsterdam is the central hub of travel activity in the city. European city destinations, airport transfers, suburban rail routes and inter-city transport such as the GVB, all start and end here.
From just behind Centraal station, you can also catch a free ferry which crosses the Het IJ estuary in just a few minutes, over to the newly fashionable Noord part of Amsterdam, making a really pleasant afternoon trip.
Those who need to store luggage can use the safe lockers available here. Found in the main hall of Centraal station, the lockers come in various sizes and cost about 5 Euro for 24 hours.
Parking in Amsterdam
There will normally be public car parking facilities spread throughout the city, although taking public transport is a much easier way of getting around town.
