Barcelona transport information
Taxi in Barcelona
Taxis in Barcelona are black with a yellow stripe. They are readily available, and still relatively inexpensive.
To hail a cab, look for a taxi showing a green light on its roof. This indicates that it is free. Just wave your hand.
The meter will show the fare, but extra fees do occur; between city and airport, with luggage to be handled, or late at night. This is detailed on a sticker inside the cab.
Metro and Bus in Barcelona
Barcelona's Metro underground is the fastest way to get around. Get your ticket at any metro stop and for multiple journeys, the T10 metro pass is recommended, as you get 10 zone-free journeys for around 8 Euro.
The Metro operates Monday-Thursday from 5am till midnight, Friday 5am-2am, Saturday 24 hours around the clock until midnight on Sunday. During certain city fiestas and special events, the metro is open 24 hours.
Check out this map of the Barcelona Metro.
Buses are very frequent and although a slow means of transport, you can enjoy Barcelona's wonderful views and get your bearings. Normal buses run from around 6am until 10.30pm.
There's also a Nitbus service running all night on limited routes from Plaça Catalunya.
Your metro pass operates on Metro, bus, Nitbus, and also on the Funicular to Montjuïc or Tibidabo.
Major transport stations in Barcelona
There are several important Renfe and Rodalies train stations, connecting with the metro, bus and airport train:
Sants Estació has the train to Barcelona's El Prat airport, with regional train and bus departures, such as the Reus airport bus.
Passeig de Gracia station also connects with El Prat's airport train and is good for Eixample, Plaça Catalunya and Gracia.
Estació de França, connects to the airport train and is ideal for destinations in Gótico, Borne, Barceloneta and Poble Nou.
Other main stations with suburban rail connections include Plaça Catalunya and Arc de Triomfo.
Estació Nord serves international bus routes and the Girona airport bus. Located near the Arc de Triomfo metro, it's close to Vila Olimpica, Poble Nou and Eixample Dreta.
There is 24h luggage storage at Sants and Estació Nord (5 Euro approx).
Driving and Parking in Barcelona
When driving in Barcelona city centre, you should pay attention to the coloured lines for street parking. Parking is prohibited in areas with yellow lines. Within blue or green lines you need to buy a ticket, but depending on the district these spaces are sometimes free, such as during the night.
There are public car parking facilities spread throughout the city, although taking public transport is a much easier way of getting around town.
To find the nearest car park to an apartment, have a look at this parking link. You can enter an address or area, in order to find the nearest car park available, with a guide to pricing.
A great resource for driving tourists in Barcelona is the B:SM plan, which offers good rates with the P-8 card for long-stay parking in the city centre and also parking near to certain Barcelona attractions. Click here for more information about B:SM and parking in Barcelona.
Barcelona El Prat (BCN) airport transfer information
Barcelona El Prat airport is conveniently located 10km from the city centre.
Renfe Rodalies trains depart every half hour from the airport, from around 05.30am until 23.00pm. Take the overhead walkway between terminals A and B to reach the station. You can board with a T10 metro pass (for 10 journeys), bought at a ticket machine, which can be used by multiple passengers. Service C10 stops at Sants Estació and Passeig de Gracia, before terminating at Estació de França.
Aerobus operates a blue shuttle bus between Barcelona airport and the city centre, every 15 minutes from 05.30am until 01.00am, taking 25 minutes. A single ticket costs around 5€.
Taking a taxi from Barcelona airport is recommended, to arrive at your apartment quickly and directly. Taxis from El Prat airport into the city take about 30 minutes and cost about 30 Euro, with an additional charge for each large piece of luggage handled.
Flying into Reus (REU) and Girona (GRO) Airports
These two airports are situated approximately an hour and twenty minutes outside of central Barcelona by bus; Girona to the North and Reus to the South. There are frequent buses to coordinate with every flight. The fare into Barcelona from either airport is roughly 12 Euro single, 24 Euro return and this is the easiest way into the city. At Reus you pay the fare directly to the driver but in Girona you need to buy tickets at a booth beside the bus (cash only).
Check this outgoing and return bus timetable for Reus Airport to Barcelona Sants Estació.
