Lisbon transport information

Taxi in Lisbon

Taxis in Lisbon are a cream colour, and are always readily available, yet still relatively inexpensive.

There are taxi ranks all over Lisbon, in the busy areas of town and you can also just wave your hand to hail one.

The meter will show the fare, however, extra fees do occur, for example at night or with airport surcharges.

Metro, bus and tram in Lisbon

Lisbon is a sunny and pleasant city for walking, but its steep streets may leave you tired after a day’s sightseeing.  The best method is to use public transport going uphill and then take a leisurely stroll back down.  The 7 Colinas card allows you a full day trip in buses or metro.

Lisbon's metro (the underground subway network) is modern and efficient. It runs from 6.30am to 1am, and many of the stations are decorated with contemporary art, making the metro a tourist attraction in itself!

The tram network in Lisbon makes a really charming way to do some sightseeing. With routes all over the city, you can jump aboard and relax as the tram takes you up and around Lisbon's hilly avenues and narrow passages, with great views.

Major transport stations in Lisbon

Cais do Sodré is the major bus, metro, train, and ferry terminal. Trains depart to Cascais and Estoril, and trams to Belém. The ferries link to Cacilhas across the river. This journey is worth taking for views of the city's skyline.

Oriente Station, located in Parque das Nações, is a metro and bus terminal, and stop for all trains entering Lisbon.
Rossio Station serves the city suburbs, such as Sintra.

Santa Apolonia Station, in Alfama district, is for international train departures.

Sete Rios bus terminal, near the Jardim Zoologico metro, is for express and national departures.

For luggage storage, there are 24 hour facilities in Santa Apolonia station (3 Euro approx.).

Driving and Parking in Lisbon

Driving in Lisbon is not recommended as the city centre is made up of steep and narrow winding streets; many of which have tramlines or are pedestrianised and there is very limited parking. Public transport is a much easier way of getting around town.

In general where there is space to park, you will see blue zones, which must be paid for at a machine. These spaces are usually charged from Monday to Friday, 08.00am until 20.00pm and on Saturdays from 08.00am to 18.00pm.

Yellow and red zones indicate no parking. Your vehicle will be ticketed, clamped or towed if you leave your car in these areas.

To find the nearest car park to an apartment, have a look at this parking link, which maps the public car parks in central Lisbon.

Lisbon airport transfer information

Bus from Lisbon airport into the centre

Several buses stop at the arrivals terminal, and if you travel light, you can take No. 44, 45, or 83 Carris buses, which pass major avenues uptown, terminating in the old city center.  Tickets are around 1 Euro.
If you have lots of baggage, take the AeroBus 91.  This runs between the airport and the city centre, from 8am to 8.45pm.  Tickets are around 3 Euro.

Taxi from Lisbon Airport into the centre

The fastest way to reach the city center is by taxi. Available right outside the terminals, a taxi should cost you around 10 Euros, even with heavy luggage, but do ask for a receipt.
