Madrid public transport information

Taxi in Madrid

Taxis in Madrid are white with a red stripe and are always readily available in the city centre.  They are still relatively inexpensive.

Look for a taxi with a green light on, indicating that it is available and just wave your hand to hail one.

The meter will show the fare, however, extra fees do occur, for example at night, during public holidays or with airport surcharge. Tipping is not necessary.

Metro and bus in Madrid

Madrid's Metro (underground subway system) is clean, modern and very efficient. It runs from 6am to 1.30am.  An individual journey ticket, sencillo combinado, costs under 2 Euro.  All tickets are bought from a machine or a booth in every station.

If you’ll be using the Metro more than once or with a group, the 10 journey pass is great value.  At around 7 Euro, it can be used on both EMT bus and Metro services, by yourself and your travel group.  It is not valid on the Plaza de Colón-airport route.

The Tourist Travel Pass, Abono Turístico is recommended for unlimited use over consecutive days (one-person use only) on all bus and Metro networks.  Variations include a 1 day unlimited (3.50 Euro) and a full 7 day pass (20 Euro).

Major train stations in Madrid

The suburban rail network in Madrid is inexpensive and modern. Its network of 13 lines runs from 6am to midnight.

Atocha train station, in Southern Madrid, is the city's main train station; and connects with all suburban rail routes outside of the city, such as Toledo or Segovia. This station serves the new high speed AVE trains from Madrid.

Chamartín train station, in Northern Madrid, serves more international destinations.

Other main rail stations in the city centre are Príncipe Pío, Nuevos Ministerios, Recoletos, Delicias, Embajadores, Aluche.

For luggage storage, there are secure lockers at the Atocha and Chamartín train stations, at Plaza Colón airport-transfer terminal and also at the Estación Sur de Autobuses.
