Paris cultural information and guide
Paris, one of the world's most important and influential capital cities, has its own glittering tapestry of culture and history.
A sprawling European metropolis, Paris is rich in city palaces, unrivalled museums and idyllic parks, with a certain chic lifestyle that makes it so popular.
Whether you visit Paris for art, fashion, café-culture, history or even romance, Paris promises never to disappoint.
TOP 5 THINGS YOU MAY NOT KNOW ABOUT PARIS
City of Light, but not for the lightbulbs...
Some call it the City of Romance, but the nickname that sticks with Paris is the City of Light. Many assume the name comes from dazzling displays or an early history in street lighting, but the origin of Paris' popular alias is actually more symbolic.
The City of Light refers to Paris' contributions in the age of enlightenment and thereafter. The intellects of Paris, through literature, science, art, and economics, earned Paris its name as one of the world's cultural capitals. The stunning Champs Elysées and the Eiffel Tower, lit up at night, keep up Paris' reputation in a more literal sense.
Top Paris Shows for Half Price
Paris is top for opera, classical, ballet, cabaret, comedy and theatre performances, but usually with a top price tag to match. To enjoy this supremely Parisian experience with change left over for dinner, get to one of Paris' two ticket outlets selling same-day tickets at half price.
Open every day (except Mondays) from around lunchtime, the Kiosque de la Madeleine and Kiosque Montparnasse offer you opportunity for a ticket bargain. Be there early and be prepared to wait your turn, for better availability on performances. That same evening you could be heading to a Moulin Rouge show or a fantastic Paris opera, at an insider's price.
Parisian wine? Montmartre's Vineyards and Harvest Festival
Of Paris' best kept secrets, the vineyards of Montmartre are its more surprising. Nestled on the Butte-Montmartre, Le Clos Montmartre with its rockwall gardens and rows of grapevine slope down the hillside. The grounds are kept under lock-and-key, with private tours only for groups of 20 persons or more.
However, you can visit Le Clos Montmartre during its harvest festival in the first half of October. Every year since the vineyard's re-establishment in 1933, Montmartre has thrown an elaborate wine festival, where the public may enter and sample the wine for free. Check out the line-up of parades and activities for the Fête des Vendanges de Montmartre, to discover Paris' last remaining vineyard.
Eiffel Tower View Without the Queue!
For some stunning Paris views without the painfully long queues of the Eiffel Tower, there are several smarter options around the city centre for getting your fill of the skyline.
Up on the top floor of the Centre Pompidou, the Printemps store or the Institut du Monde Arabe, you will get amazing views from each buidling’s rooftop restaurant or café.
Alternatively, the Arch of La Défense and the Arc de Triomphe have superb outlooks over Paris, or simply enjoy the view from Buttes-Chaumont at the Sacré Coeur.
Free-wheeling in Paris: Fast and Easy Vélib Bikes
The word on every Parisian's lips, Vélib is Paris' answer to the public bike system. These smart and modern city bikes are easy to use and destined for locals and visitors alike.

PARIS CULTURE TAP
Paris Food & Drink
Paris is famous for its cuisine, be it a Cordon Bleu menu in a gourmet bistro, or simply a picnic with fine French cheeses, a bottle of wine and a warm baguette.
When in Paris, be sure to buy your groceries fresh from the daily farmer's markets; spread all across the city centre.
The perfectionists of café culture, a trip to Paris isn't complete without people watching from a terrace café, with a coffee and croissant. But be warned, cafés near Paris' main monuments can be very expensive.
Classical Paris
Paris is the city of grandeur; its best monuments, palaces and museums are typically of Neo-classical, Gothic, Renaissance and Haussmann styles, apart from Paris' favourite modernist structures, the Eiffel Tower and Centre Pompidou.
The following are the top sights in classical Paris:
Arc de Triomphe: Built in 1806 by Napolean, the arch was a tribute to his victory at Austerlitz. There is a small musem inside and a roof deck with excellent Paris views.
Notre Dame Cathedral: On the banks of the Seine, this cathedral has been popular in Paris for over 700 years, thanks to its gargoyles; Emanuel Bell and views from the top.
Luxembourg Gardens: Tipped as Paris' most romantic gardens, with fountains and statues, you will also find Marie de Medicis' 17th century Florentine-style palace here.
Louvre Museum: This huge renaissance palace in central Paris is France's national museum, with one of the finest collections of art, sculpture and artefacts in the world.
Paris Art Scene
While the Louvre is certainly Paris' most important art gallery, there are hundreds of museums and galleries covering more modern art, such as impressionism, cubism and contemporary art styles. Check this art listing for exhibitions in Paris.
Musée D'Orsay has the best of Paris' impressionist paintings, works by Les Fauves and art from the last centuries.
The Centre Pompidou hosts contemporary art expos, or visit Musée Picasso, for the biggest collection of the artist's work.
Paris Nightlife
Paris has a diverse nightlife scene which goes on till late.
You can check out the ever-trendy Oberkampf and Ménilmontant areas for chic little bars, have fun in the decidedly gay village of Le Marais, listen to Montmartre's live jazz, watch a thrilling cabaret show or have a big night out dancing at Rex Club.
Whether you want dinner and a show or a party in Paris until the early hours, this city has something for everyone.
